From the Kernel Summit currently taking place in Prague Linus Torvalds has released kernel 3.1.
A few changes to the release candidates are included, writes Torvalds, including some in networking and graphics cards. There were the kernel as opposed to the RC 10 in the form of patches and tarballs. The files are signed with his PGP key, so the Linux inventor in his mail .

The first-person shooter (FPS) Alien Arena has been released in version 7.52.
Alien Arena is being developed by COR Entertainment. The scenery of the game is borrowed from the science fiction films of the 50s. Alien Arena combines elements of FPS Quake III and Unreal Tournament, and is based on the GPL-licensed CRX game engine.
Alien Arena 2011 v7.52 contains four new levels and the Insta-Rockets game mode. New models, including the arming of the aliens, the Violator, mega health or haste to bring more fun. Alien Arena 7:52 supports the Inter-Earthquake Model (IQM) format, version 2, with which the movements of the characters are animated.

The lightweight Arch Linux derivative ArchBang has been released in version 2011.10. ArchBang is a rolling release distribution, update into the developer with regularly updated package versions. It uses the window manager OpenBox.
ArchBang 2011.10 is optimized for i686 and x86_64 architectures. The approx 450 MB big ISO View of the product can also be launched as a live system, so that those interested can make an image before installing the system. As well as the basic system is command line based ArchBang strong and rather aimed at experienced users.
Like the previous versions ArchBang 2011.10 pursuing a minimalist approach. It is based on a kernel 3.0 and provides only a small selection of pre-installed programs. These include the Nightly Build “minefield” of the Firefox web browser, PDF viewer and image viewer Geeqie Zathura.

The design team has released Ubuntu version 0.80 of the Ubuntu font family. About six months after the last release of two new family of fonts, condensed, and Mono have been added.
The Ubuntu-font family in 2010 was initiated in order to give more of their own identity, including Ubuntu. The writings of the family should be optimized for display performance in standard sizes. They aim to cover the entire Unicode range, which can only be reached gradually.
After more than six months of development time is now version 0.80 of the fonts. Compared to version 0.7.1 two new fonts were added: Ubuntu and Ubuntu Mono Condensed. Both were mainly from the hired firm Dalton Maag developed. The hinting information to fully condensed, in mono not yet be complete.
Ubuntu is the font family for the time being under the Ubuntu Font License 1.0 , a free license to be used but only for a transitional period. A change to the Open Font License by SIL International is sought.

The lightweight graphical web browser Dillo is available in version 3.0. The developers changed in Dillo 3.0 on the Fast Light Toolkit 1.3 (FLTK), after the previous version Dillo 2 because of the experimental status of the last FLTK2 used in many distributions was not included.
By using the stable version 1.3 of FLTK, the developers hope that Dillo3 will soon be offered again in many distributions as a lightweight alternative browser. FLTK 1.3 also allows it to let Dillo3 Mac OS X to run.
Dillo3 has been approximated in several areas of the behavior of other applications. So the browser can now stop using the shortcut Ctrl-q and individual tabs can be closed with Ctrl-w. Pressing Shift-Ctrl-Tab, users can quickly move through open pages. Dillo3 supports multiple search engines, but they must be previously specified in the file dillorc. The new OpenSSH version 5.9 provides a number of improvements and new features. Among them is especially emphasized the possibility, the child process that performs the authentication to run in a sandbox.
The OpenSSH (SSH stands for Secure Shell) is a secure telnet replacement, the connections between two computers is encrypted. The package consists of a server and a client program and auxiliary programs. In addition, it supports secure FTP (SFTP) and Secure Copy to other computers (SCP).
For ten years OpenSSH already offers the possibility of the child processes that enable the user login to run under a separate, less-privileged user account. Thus, only the main process, which by default listens on port 22 for connections to run with root privileges.
The code in question is compact and correspondingly easy to secure against vulnerabilities. The much larger part of the new network connections and the authentication treated may be covered in the new version 5.9 even further. This is made possible by the new directive Use Privilege Separation=sandbox . This makes the process run in a sandbox are allowed only in the specific system calls.
