Red Hat Enterprise Linux Life Cycle

Red Hat offers services for each major release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux throughout four life cycle phases – called Production 1, 2, and 3, and an Extended Life Phase.

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and 6 are offered with 10 years of Production Phase support, followed by a three year Extended Life Phase.
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 and 4 are offered with seven years of Production Phase support, followed by a three year Extended Life Phase. Optionally, during the Extended Life Phase, customers may purchase an Add-On called Extended Life Cycle Support (ELS) that provides support similar to Production Phase 3.

Fedora will be rolling-release distro?

Among developers Fedora distribution discussion broke out on the distribution of transition “sliding” model updates, similar to that used in the distributions Arch, Gentoo, OpenSUSE Tumbleweed.
It is worth noting that at present there is a special Fedora repository for “moving” updates – Rawhide. But, according to developers, to always use this repository is almost unusable, as falling within a package are often unstable, and upgrade of critical components (such as kernel and system libraries) from Rawhide can simply bring the system inoperable and sometimes lead loss of data .

Became the most popular Debian GNU / Linux distribution on Web servers

According W3Techs, Debian again became leaders among distros GNU / Linux, are installed on Web servers. In June 2010 he gave the palm to Debian distro CentOS, and the last one and a half years they were in lockstep. Currently 9.6% of all sites managed by Debian. He also became the operating system with the fastest positive dynamics: daily 54 of 1 million most popular sites come under control of Debian.

First official release of Ceylon language

Presented by the 1st official release language Ceylon M1 “Newton”. Ceylon – it’s JVM-language for writing business applications and developed by RedHat. The release includes a compiler, documentation for the compiler and the runtime language module.

Language features:

  • JVM primitive types are simple classes in Ceylon;
  • inference and conclusion of the argument types Based on an analysis of the main types;
  • simplified definition of the classes: removed the getters, setters and designers;
  • optional parameters with default values;

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.2

The company Red Hat has announced the release distro Red Hat Enterprise Linux 06.02 , which is represented by error correction, implementation of support for new hardware and adding new features while maintaining full compatibility with the software environment branch RHEL 6.x.

RHEL 6.2 is available in the following ways:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Client 6 for x86 and 64 AMD64/Intel
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux High Performance Compute Node 6 for architecture AMD64/Intel 64
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server for architectures x86, AMD64/Intel 64, IBM System z and IBM POWER;
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation x86 and AMD64/Intel 64.

Red Hat buys Gluster

At Tuesday, October 4, 2011, Red Hat Inc. announced the signing of an agreement to acquire Gluster – producer of free software for data storage GlusterFS.

GlusterFS – a free, distributed, parallel, linearly scalable file system with the ability to protect against failures. GlusterFS the stuff of user-space using technology FUSE, so no support from the operating system kernel and runs on top of existing file systems (ext4, reiserfs, btrfs, etc).

Beta version RHEV 3.0

Long-awaited beta version of a control server running on Linux-platform, officially saw the light.

A partial list of changes:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Manager is now a Java-application running on JBoss Enterprise Application Platform for RHEL (in contrast to all earlier versions, which were based on. NET / C #).
  • Hypervisors managed RHEV-Manager-ohm, based on RHEL 6.
  • Supports up to 128 logical processors and 2TB of memory on hypervisors and up to 64 virtual processors and 2TB of memory to virtual machines.
  • Portal for privileged users (power users) can give users access to create virtual machines, creating templates, and administration of the individual parts of the system.

CentOS 5.6 released

Developers are pleased to CentOS 5.6 – distribution based on packet-based RHEL 5.6.

Changes:

Starting with CentOS 5.6, centos-release package includes the configuration files necessary to access the repositories debuginfo and vault, which previously had to be downloaded separately. Repository CentOS-Debuginfo.repo contains a set debuginfo-package (among other things needed to Systemtap), a repository of CentOS-Vault.repo contains the previous (and no longer supported), corrective releases of CentOS 5.
