The EU-funded Webinos project that traces the development of hardware-and operating system-independent software, has now released a public developer portal and proclaimed simultaneously with the activation of a developer competition.

Webinos is one of the European Union in the framework of JoinUp initiative funded with € 10 million open-source project that aims to bring the development of hardware-and operating system-independent software for “the future of the Internet” ahead. Webinos understood both as a platform, but will also make themselves available software components. So far, her nearly twenty companies and institutions, led by Dr. Stephan Steglich of the Fraunhofer Society for the Promotion of Applied Research in the project are also involved, including the Technical University of Munich, the BMW Group Research and Technology, the German Telekom and said Fraunhofer Society for the Promotion of Applied Research. A full list can be found on the project page . The promotion will expire in August 2013 and the project will be continued by a company founded by the Consortium Foundation.

Roland McGrath, founder of the system library Glibc, announced the dissolution of overseeing the development of Glibc steering committee, which will lead to the transfer of decision-making powers in the hands of the team’s active maintainers. The grml project has released version 2011.12 of the live distribution for system recovery and system management.

Grml 2011.12 is the second release this year, according to 2011.05 . The distribution has been updated to kernel 3.1.6. It is based on Debian, and can also be installed on a hard drive, but is especially intended as a live CD for administrators.

Grml 2011.12 “servant root privilages” had the goal to be smaller and to reduce the number of variants. Thus, the variants “small” and “medium” were deleted.
