Linux kernel 3.3 released

by admin ·

Linux initiator Linus Torvalds has released version 3.3 of the Linux kernel. A number of Android subsystems have been integrated, so that the difference to the Android kernel reduced.

In spite of extensive changes in turn is the patch from Linux 2.3 to 3.3 slightly smaller than previous versions. About 60% of the account changes, according to Torvalds to the driver, which is less than usual. 20% relate to changes in the architecture and 20% of the rest
Linux 3.3 brings some subsystems in the kernel, which were designed by Google Android. It is still not all of Android over, but some is in its present form does not even get into the kernel. However, it is conceivable that the developers agree on common functionality that reduces the remaining differences to the Android kernel on.

On its Google + page Torvalds expressed cautious optimism to Gnome 3.2. “Hey, with gnome-tweak-tool and the dock extension Gnome starts 3.2 look almost usable” As recently as August he had, like several other kernel developers, Gnome 3 called the shambles and desired by the Fedora Project, a fork of Gnome second It was stated that it changed like other developers, Xfce, since both Gnome and KDE 3 are four unusable.

LinuxCon Europe: Linus Torvalds on userspace and ARM

by admin ·

A panel discussion with Linus Torvalds and other kernel developers marked the opening of LinuxCon Europe in Prague.

“I am now even mainly a manager. I write little code, but helping others to be productive,” the kernel-chief was talking to a self-assessment. With him sitting on the podium Alan Cox, Thomas Gleixner and Paul McKenney, moderation was the Red Hat developer Lennart Poettering. He asked how important it is for developers to preserve compatibility with the kernel userspace programs. “Disturbing the user is off-limits,” said Torvalds. At the same time, he said, “When changing versions of kernel 3.0 there were programs that failed just been to the version number. Such a program is simply poorly written.

Nevertheless, we have set a flag that indicates if desired as version 2.6.40. Actually, an idiotic patch – but it shows how important to us is the user space. ”

As a rather facetious post Poettering said that the kernel hackers have slowly become a club of old men who go to bed early? This is according to Torvalds, especially for the Kernel Summit, which preceded the LinuxCon: “Some people just have jet lag, otherwise you meet here, the older, experienced developers and maintainers, but there are also young, which grow back..” Alan Cox sees the problem in less than age in the sex of the developer: “The gender issue in the Linux community is still unsolved.”

Linux Kernel 3.0 released

by admin ·

Linux initiator Linus Torvalds has released version 3.0 of the Linux kernel. While increasing the version number associated with the 20th Birthday is coming from Linux, kernel 2.6.39 without technically the continuation of revolutionary changes.

By incrementing the version number to 3.0 will prevent the third place of the previous version still continues to grow. There is no technical reason for changing it is not, the version is 3.0 but a time shortly before the 20th Birthday of Linux, Linus Torvalds, for what was reason enough. The next kernel version will be 3.1, with the first release candidate is in two weeks, possibly due to vacation of Torvalds also something to be expected later. Corrected versions of Linux 3.0, released in points 3.0.1 and so on. A fourth number for these updates to the stable releases will be in future no longer needed.

Lasted just over eight weeks of the latest development cycle of the Linux kernel , even after the development of Linux 2.6.39 took only nine weeks. Whether this represents a lasting trend to higher frequencies publication remains to be seen. Linus Torvalds called the development cycle in its announcement quietly, but the release was delayed by a last minute bug found in but a few days. The error was extremely difficult to reproduce, to find it took several days, however, the correction was basically just one line. The error expressed in the fact that was copying a very large number of files a file missing from the copy. Probably the mistake was a long time. However, since several weeks of intense stress tests were needed to reproduce it, it is unlikely a user have been affected.

Total Torvalds has integrated over 9,800 changes to Linux 3.0, the last of which 2200 were mainly corrections. As is usually two thirds of all new or updated driver changes.

Linus maintainers sent a letter reminding them of the merger stage. It is expected that stage of the merge kernel 6.2.1940 will take less time. It usually takes about two weeks after the major release of each core, this time it will just briefly for a few days. At the end of this message, Linus Torvalds wrote something interesting.
