Test Day Fedora: Power Management

Fedora now spends one day a broad profile of the test: testing the power management.

List of test cases:

  • suspend / resume using pm-utils;
  • hibernate / resume using pm-utils;
  • gathering information on the errors pm-utils;
  • Notebook: identification of the battery and power supply, the reaction pm-powersave to change the source;
  • Notebook: a reaction to the closing of the lid;
  • Notebook: Change the brightness of the screen;
  • basic functionality and utility service tuned tuned-adm;
  • Notebook and in the presence of wattmeter – measurement of energy consumption for different profiles tuned.

Test Day Fedora: Gnome Shell Software Rendering

In the wake of the newly released Release Gnome 3.4, today, March 29, Fedora test day carries on the work of Gnome Shell, in the absence of hardware support for 3D.

Apple deteriorated Linux Support for CUPS

Fedora developers Tim Waugh points out that Apple has made in development of version 1.6 of CUPS away some of what is on Mac OS X is not needed.

CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System) was developed by Easy Software. The pressure system has long been the standard for many Linux distributions and some UNIX systems since it among other things, the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) and can use all the capabilities of the printer. Since February 2007, Apple held by CUPS and employers in the main developer of CUPS, Michael Sweet. Although Apple promised, CUPS develop under a free license, and this was also, it seems that the new trend seems to be that are removed in Mac OS X is not required parts of CUPS. This is the CUPS “Apple Printing System”, which suggests its name Hohn.

Fedora will be rolling-release distro?

Among developers Fedora distribution discussion broke out on the distribution of transition “sliding” model updates, similar to that used in the distributions Arch, Gentoo, OpenSUSE Tumbleweed.
It is worth noting that at present there is a special Fedora repository for “moving” updates – Rawhide. Kororaa 16th Fedora remix with extras

The Australian developer Christopher Smart has released its Fedora Remix Kororaa version in 16th.

The desktop distribution based on Fedora 16 ( we reported ), but offers a few extras. These include repositories for third-party software such as Google Chrome and VirtualBox, as well as an installer for Adobe Flash plug-in.

2.4.0 Monitorix monitored NTP, Squid and Icecast

Monitorix, an open source tool for system monitoring provides, in version 2.4.0 three other services under his supervision.

The new additions are the NTP time server, the Web proxy and cache Squid and the Icecast streaming server. Also new in version 2.4.0 is the ability to monitor it on FreeBSD and OpenBSD the network ports and the Nginx traffic. Further details can be found in thechangelog .

The Journal: life after the syslog

In his new article, Lennart Poettering (Lennart Poettering), a well-known sound server PulseAudio development and system load systemd, explained what he was not satisfied with syslog, and suggested that its universal implementation of the system log on Linux.

Among other things, this implementation does not support syslog protocol transmission of syslog and there are no support network, but instead of text logs using binary data formats, access to which is invited to a separate shared library.

Red Hat Fedora writes scholarship in 2012

The open-source solutions provider Red Hat has announced that he now accepts applications for the Fedora Scholarship program. In the program, students may participate around the world that support the Fedora Project or other open-source project with contributions.

The Fedora Scholarship program this year goes into the fifth round.

Under the program each year a high school student who has received a contribution to the Fedora project and made his studies in the fall.

The scholarship is worth $ 2,000 annually and is paid over a period of four years. If the grant recipient will attend a FUDCon, Red Hat takes over for the duration of the scholarship for travel and accommodation expenses to the nearest event.

The scholarship is designed to encourage young people to use free software and support with contributions. “The Fedora Scholarship recognizes young talent in their quest for innovation. Hir hope to encourage future technologists and to encourage open development “, so Jared Smith, employee and Fedora project leader at Red Hat.
