Support for Fedora 13 is running out

by admin ·

As Kevin Fenzi wrote in an e-mail to the list of the project, next week is scheduled to end support for version 13 of the Fedora distribution.

Fedora 13 was in May last year published and received up to now a number of security updates. Users of the old version, however, should end next week thinking about a migration of their systems. For with the Linux distribution Fedora, the rule is that each version will still support a month over the appearance of the next version out. In a six-month release cycle results in the effective support for any version for 13 months.

Fedora 15

by admin ·

The newly released Fedora 15 will bring to the users as every half year, the latest in free software and the latest technologies. One of the highlights of the new version from the user perspective, the new Gnome third

Fedora 15 »Lovelock,” is the latest version of the six-monthly Linux distribution dar. How to get the release notes can see, Fedora is 15 with Gnome 3.0.0, the new Gnome shell contains, and the latest versions of KDE (4.6.3) and Xfce (4.8.1). The new init system systemd is used by default. Systemd whose latest version 26 is used, also for session management. libre office OpenOffice.org 3.3.2 replaced, and Firefox 4 has been integrated into version 4.0.1.

This item will be limited to the desktop environments Gnome and KDE 3. For practical reasons, other restrictions are necessary. So naturally many belonging to the distribution software packages have been changed or replaced. With few exceptions, these changes can not be received; one can only assume that most of the packages in all current distributions are almost identical and work equally well everywhere.

As always, it should be noted that this is not a test of hardware compatibility. It is well known that Linux supports more hardware than any other operating system, and that the vast majority of the standard package. A test specific hardware would be too much work for little benefit. This was left to those who believe it necessary. If there are problems with hardware, are the websites of the Fedora Project provides the solution.

As a test on real hardware is not the aim of the article is to be used for the product, two identical virtual machines, 64 bit, under KVM, each with 768 MB RAM. KVM because the necessary conditions for Gnome 3 has not, as was the test of Ubuntu tries for a 64-bit VM in Virtualbox to use. It was found that version 4.0.6 has not offered sufficient functionality in hardware acceleration. An update to version 4.0.8 should help. However, the VM crashed shortly after takeoff from Gnome third The problem remained unsolved. For the test of Gnome 3, then an Acer Netbook A150 was used, which happened to be offered for a new installation.

First impressions of Fedora 15 + GnomeShell

by admin ·

On Tuesday last, at last my wait is over, and I could download and install Fedora 15 on my team. I’m not going to make a comprehensive analysis that brings the news dae, but first impressions Post-Installation.

If we think, in a transition from Fedora 14 to version 15, if you use Gnome you’ll notice a huge difference (unless you’ve ventured to use Gnome3 in ArchLinux LiveCD or any of that could be downloaded from the website Gnome).

Beginning because it brings Gnome2 default Fedora 14 is not very nice … I tried several times to go over to KDE because of this, because even by putting themes, icons, etc … still looked very ugly. Something different in Ubuntu, where the default Gnome was already a little “tuning.”

With Gnome3 not suffer from this, I had used in ArchLinux immediately passed to the repository [extra], and without fear or anything, it is really pleasing to the eye. He who comes in Fedora 15, has almost no changes (only the system integration), some applications pre-installed, but nothing special.

If we talk about performance in general, obviously, you know GnomeShell not run on any computer. In mine is fluid but two cases. The first, using any Java application (Sea JDownloader the example) makes me slow down the environment to the point, if you want to use that application for a long time, I have to spend to Fallback Mode (For those who do not know, is the Gnome3 interface without GnomeShell).

Second, GoogleTalk chat plugin swallowed my processor when I make a video call … but it is a strange behavior, because sometimes it’s all fluid, but I can not open anything else, say a video on Youtube (Yes, I know, with that combination any computer with Linux is dying) and my computer becomes unusable .. . not even open the System Monitor to end it slows down these processes, is one of two solutions, first, be patient and wait till you get the opportunity to open your chat session and finish, then close and wait Youtube normalization process … and the second reboot.

But if we talk in general terms, improvements in performance are noted, em my laptop, I feel a great reduction in speed, and temperature does not rise much, and most importantly (What ever happened to me with KDE) I have I always +70% CPU consumption.
