With a small delay in a new version patchseta pf-kernel for the Linux kernel version 3.5.

For those who do not know: pf-kernel – it is a useful set of patches for the kernel to improve the responsiveness of the working environment, also adds some useful things, such as third-party subsystem hibernation.

In this release:

added a mechanism for automatic association of identical memory pages UKSM , allowing you to save RAM when running multiple copies of the same programs or heavyweights such as Firefox (it has saved me personally about 300 MB);

added an alternative mechanism for load balancing BLD for the process scheduler CFS (I emphasize that this is not a new process scheduler);

removed LinuxIMQ, because I personally do not use it, and new releases do not let fellow developers;

removed l7-filter, since it is not able to get it to work with new kernels and patches from the developers do not have;

Now all the patches signed my key .

In 3.5.1-pf NO-ck and BFS, as they are not general for branch 3.5 (Kolivas got a job and has reduced its activities as developer of the kernel). BLD is a temporary solution.

A well-known problem: I have not worked TuxOnIce, although it continues past few versions. Nigel Cunningham is working on this.

Most requested: BLD try to unsubscribe and impressions.

OpenSUSE developer Andrew Wafaa (Andrew Wafaa) announced the closure of Smeegol, a project to transfer light notebook interface with MeeGo on OpenSUSE.

The developer came to the conclusion that within the project MeeGo not expected further development of the notebook interface, and with that and work on Smeegol he considers pointless. “18 months of development under the cat’s tail” – summed up the disappointment, Andrew.

That the project MeeGo less interested in the netbook market, it became clear at the last FOSDEM from the submitted development plan for the project: for already released Netbook UX assumed only bug fixes. From the conversations at the same FOSDEM it became clear that the reasons for this development is well justified: draft Netbook UX did not justify their hopes.

The reasons for failure were also identified by sharp fluctuations and falling netbook market. Moreover, in informal conversations mentioned that the project MeeGo completely focused on Qt and donated development based on GTK.

Yet Andrew Wafaa assured that repository Smeegol based MeeGo 1.0 will continue to be available. If someone wants to take over the project – it will be only too pleased. Nursing same Andrew, however, was final.

Nagios and its younger sibling as Nagios in the world of IT monitoring the measure of all things. For the top dog is it cost an almost infinite number of plugins and extensions, GUIs and tools, the selection and activation of the admin when you install a lot of time sometimes.

Demanding users with a need for more advanced plugins that were not included in Linux distributions, or the pre-Nagios packages remained, so far, even just the long way over the source code. Similar to the last issue presented Open IT cockpit will last few months, the Open monitoring distribution of the needs of newcomers and advanced users operate by features with a simple installation combines cutting-edge, but make prominent Nagios developers and configurations together software and maintain the packages.
OMD The abbreviation stands for a pre-configured Nagios installation with add-ons.

Martin Hollmichel, Release Manager, Open Office, and senior product manager at Oracle, has announced a clearing out of the Issue Tracker for the benefit of the release of the software processes.

Both the course of the release of Open Office 3.3 As well as the show from earlier versions that it would be enough room for improvement, Hollmichel wrote to the Open Office team. Release Manager and Marketing and Product Management should be informed as possible about exactly what the problems are to solve and even – in the second case – which features in each release are included, Hollmichl writes in his article .

The existing rule, use more or less flat the Issue Tracker, have proved to be bumpy. For product management of the many changes were difficult to overlook, for the release manager there was a lot of work to inform himself about the state of problems and their solutions in a timely manner.

Hollmichel proposes only record for actually finished and in process of being features and patches in the issue tracker. The selection of the necessary work will leave it to the respective project managers.

For the upcoming release of Open Office 3.4, according Hollmichel schedule could look like that to 27 January, the new rules are understood and implemented so far, the disappearance of all unaddressed and non-critical features and problems from the Issue Tracker. To 14 February should then plan the features and enhancements are developed enough that integration is possible. The team could then decide on the status of the features and bugs and allow for a possibly longer. The February deadline should also be an alpha version should be possible.

With version 2.6.37 will open as usual, the merge window for the next kernel. He previously but please, give the current kernel to a few moments.

Besides the usual driver updates and improvements kernel 2.6.37 is needed without BKL (Big Kernel Lock) from. At least all the key components of which are exempted, Torvalds, and it is easily possible to compile a kernel without BKL substantial support. However, it warns Torvalds, are not capable of any existing driver to get along without BKL.

The Linux Foundation, dedicated to the standardization of hardware and software components for the operating system GNU / Linux has been reported into the organization as a member of ‘gold’ of China Mobile. Income is very important because the Chinese telecoms giant is the world’s largest operator by number of customers and scale of networks and offers the possibility of promoting Linux to about 600 million users.

China Mobile’s decision to join the Linux Foundation as a member of ‘gold’ (the second largest in the organization) and its commitment to Linux would mean “a reorganization of operating systems in China and in the telecommunications industry,” said Chief Executive Officer Jim Zemlin Foundation, in announcing the entry of the operator.

Important announcement and that China is the world’s largest operator by number of customers, network scale and market value, located in the post 77 (and counting) in the top-500 companies by Fortune magazine.

Therefore, the opportunity to promote Linux to 560 million users has been highlighted by the Foundation, besides the immense potential of a country like China, which plays an important role in recent years in the Linux ecosystem with extent of developers contributing to kernel, the use of open system in education and trade, or the fact that over 25 percent of the country’s SME servers using Linux, exceeding the world average.

In addition, the entry of China Mobile’s foundation dedicated to the promotion, formation and standardization of hardware and software for Linux, c o confirm the commitment of the operator with Linux because it has its own operating system oPhone (derived from Android) and a cloud computing system under free software.

A recent report by the Linux Foundation Yeoman Technology Group has revealed interesting facts about the adoption of Linux in the enterprise: companies face increasing migration from Microsoft solutions, not just in the field of servers, but also seems to start to conquer the interest of employers to their jobs. Another key factor for the interest of companies is the collaborative effort of the FLOSS community.

The study is based on a survey of more than 2,000 users who were elected by the Linux Foundation End User Council, and conclusions are culled from 387 respondents who belong to larger organizations, companies with over 500 employees and / or more than 500 million dollars a year in income.

While obviously the data from a survey by an organization by the Linux Foundation and that can provide a point of view “optimistic” about the data, the findings are surprising in several sections.

For example, many large companies plan to add more Linux servers next year (76.4% said so), while less than half (41.2%) planned to add more Windows-based servers year comes.

And what’s more interesting: 43.6% of companies surveyed had plans to reduce its use of Windows servers next year.

Another interesting data is that Linux and is used not only for traditional LAMP servers (Linux, Apache, Perl / PHP and MySQL), but is also being used in loads of mission critical work.

Over 66% of companies are developing new applications on Linux, 36% are migrating from Windows, and 31.4% are migrating from Unix to Linux.

The reasons for this migration are varied, but for example the cost is not as paramount: the characteristics and technical superiority was the main reason for the adoption of Linux solutions for 67.5% of respondents.

Finally, it is also important to note that companies that use Linux solutions eventually become contributors to Open Source projects: about 50% of respondents indicated that the ability to modify the code as one of the reasons for the adoption of Linux.

More than a third of businesses stated that test developments and send error reports, while 13.4% of respondents actively contributing code to various projects.
