Out pf-kernel patchset for Linux v3.5

With a small delay in a new version patchseta pf-kernel for the Linux kernel version 3.5.

For those who do not know: pf-kernel – it is a useful set of patches for the kernel to improve the responsiveness of the working environment, also adds some useful things, such as third-party subsystem hibernation.

In this release:

  • added a mechanism for automatic association of identical memory pages UKSM , allowing you to save RAM when running multiple copies of the same programs or heavyweights such as Firefox (it has saved me personally about 300 MB);

GNU Scientific Library (GSL) 1.15

May 6, 2011 was announced version 1.15 GNU Scientific Library (GSL) – library for computing in applied mathematics, and science.

GSL is part of GNU , and is distributed under the GNU GPL .

GSL is written in C and contains a significant number of functions – from elementary mathematical operations and operations with complex numbers to numerical methods of differentiation, interpolation, approximation, solution of differential equations, wavelet-transform and many others.

Farewell Smeegol

OpenSUSE developer Andrew Wafaa (Andrew Wafaa) announced the closure of Smeegol, a project to transfer light notebook interface with MeeGo on OpenSUSE.

The developer came to the conclusion that within the project MeeGo not expected further development of the notebook interface, and with that and work on Smeegol he considers pointless. “18 months of development under the cat’s tail” – summed up the disappointment, Andrew.

Open Distribution Monitoring

Seven prominent Nagios developers brought out last October, an adapted and extended Nagios version: OMD, the Open Distribution Monitoring. They donated their installation packages, and numerous add-ons. In Linux kommando 02/2011 OMD left in Mark Feilner a good impression.

Nagios and its younger sibling as Nagios in the world of IT monitoring the measure of all things. For the top dog is it cost an almost infinite number of plugins and extensions, GUIs and tools, the selection and activation of the admin when you install a lot of time sometimes.

Open SSH 5.7 with Elliptic Curve Cryptography

The free SSH implementation of Open SSH implemented in the new version features the Elliptic Curve Cryptography in accordance with the specification RFC 5656th

Open Office does release rules

Martin Hollmichel, Release Manager, Open Office, and senior product manager at Oracle, has announced a clearing out of the Issue Tracker for the benefit of the release of the software processes.

Kernel 2.6.37 is ready

Linus Torvalds has released the Linux 2.6.37 kernel to the public.

China Mobile to Linux Foundation

The Linux Foundation, dedicated to the standardization of hardware and software components for the operating system GNU / Linux has been reported into the organization as a member of ‘gold’ of China Mobile. Income is very important because the Chinese telecoms giant is the world’s largest operator by number of customers and scale of networks and offers the possibility of promoting Linux to about 600 million users.

China Mobile’s decision to join the Linux Foundation as a member of ‘gold’ (the second largest in the organization) and its commitment to Linux would mean “a reorganization of operating systems in China and in the telecommunications industry,” said Chief Executive Officer Jim Zemlin Foundation, in announcing the entry of the operator.

Success of Linux in the enterprise level

A recent report by the Linux Foundation Yeoman Technology Group has revealed interesting facts about the adoption of Linux in the enterprise: companies face increasing migration from Microsoft solutions, not just in the field of servers, but also seems to start to conquer the interest of employers to their jobs. Another key factor for the interest of companies is the collaborative effort of the FLOSS community.

The study is based on a survey of more than 2,000 users who were elected by the Linux Foundation End User Council, and conclusions are culled from 387 respondents who belong to larger organizations, companies with over 500 employees and / or more than 500 million dollars a year in income.
