Chalk The Walk! – Learing The Fedora Packaging Process

I’ve wanted to learn the process of Fedora packaging for a while now, however I couldn’t find anything not already packaged that I use or want to use. Thanks to Mairin Duffy of the Fedora art team and her weekly blog posts called ‘Unpackaged Open Font of the Week’ , I now had something to package. These posts highlight nice open fonts that are in need of a packager.

The font of the week was Tiza. A bold, chalky slab-serif font inspired by the lovely slab-serif Giza. It supports many diacritics in addition to the basic Latin set of characters. The font was created by Pablo Caro of NuevoStudio.

Fedora 9 Finally

My main system is finally running Fedora 9 (referred to as F9 from here on), admittedly I thought this day might not come. I normally switch to the latest Fedora version within a month of its release, which has been the case since Fedora(Core)4, the first version I used as a desktop OS. This wasn’t possible for me with F9 for a number of reasons.

At release, F9 was unusable (for my needs), and even a month later, it was still to under developed to deploy as my regular desktop OS. I think it’s fair to say F9 is the first “alpha” release since FC1, and a step backwards when measured against previous versions. With such a negative view of F9, one might ask why am I running it now? The answer has multiple parts.

FUDcon F11 Today

In less than an hour I’ll been on my way to FUDcon F11, in Boston. While I tried I wasn’t able to complete my first Linuxkast in time to post before leaving. Maybe I finish it over the weekend.

Well see you at FUDcon, or see you Monday :) .

Fedora 10 Final testing

Testing of Fedora 10 Final is currently under way and going well. I would of liked to test myself but am in the middle a transition here at GHQ and have no box to do testing on. I wish them good luck and hope they don’t find any deal breakers during the testing.

Marching with Fedora (joining the Fedora Project)

About three weeks ago after a lot of thought, I decided to join the Fedora Project. Since then it’s been a slow start, as I wasn’t sure where I might fit in the project. That changed at the beginning of this week when I applied for and was excepted to the Bug Triage Team.

I thought bug triage would be the best place to start, and so far the choice seems the right one. Everyone has been friendly and helpful, explaining the procedures, walking through an example. A promising if slow start.

I’ll be posting regularly about my experiences as a new Fedora Project community member and at bug triage.

Echo Icon Set Removed as Default – Fedora 10 (beta)

After an update I see all of the Echo Icon Set has been removed from Fedora 10 (beta) as the default icon set. I assume this means we wont be seeing it them in final. I liked the icon set myself and am already missing it.

Fedora Updates resume… “This time I really mean it!”

Fedora Updates are finally up again. Jesse Keating posted earlier today that updates would be working again today, and I could almost hear in his voice, “Guys, this time I really mean it!”.

Fedora 10 delayed… again.

Per J. Keating on fedora-announce-list, Fedora 10 will be further delayed. The new release date is now set at 25 November.

This wasn’t unexpected given the infrastructure problem of the past few weeks. The infrastructure problem created huge impact on development of Fedora 9, bringing work to a halt for at least a month, as shown in the lack of updates (security and regular) since the update servers returned to service. This announcement shows the infrastructure problem is having a major impact on Fedora 10 as well. To what extent only time will tell.

Fedora 8 Decommissioned

Today at 1400 hours, front line Kommando Linux units officially decommissioned Fedora 8 and began transition to Fedora 9.

Fedora 8 was deployed with KL front line units on 9 Nov 2007, and has provided excellent service, finishing with an overall rating of 4. With it’s decommission today, it ends its streak as the longest deployed Fedora OS in KL desktop service. While the continued service of F8 can be fully attributed to failed field trails for F9, it doesn’t take way the fact that “Werewolf” was a solid release.

Fedora 8, dismissed.
