On the DRI mailing list Nvidia’s developer Aaron Plattner has inquired about details of RandR functions to support Nvidia’s Optimus hybrid graphics. Just recently, Linus Torvalds Nvidia has denounced a lack of commitment.
In the e-mail Plattner writes that he had been a “proof of concept” that one of the Nvidia driver could handle all your Linux laptops with Nvidia’s Optimus hybrid graphics. The development is still in full swing. But he makes some inquiries concerning the RandR protocol in version 1.4.
The lack of support of Optimus within Linux had recently led to the Linux kernel chief Linus Torvalds in the event of a question and answer session Nvidia clearly put in the pillory . Nvidia’s response was a statement that takes the driver’s own policy to protect and defiantly on the community project Bumblebee to support Optimus points. Against this background, it is interesting that Nvidia now apparently considering working on Linux drivers support.
Randr stands for “Resize and Rotate” and provides within the X window system that the user can change the screen format. Its version 1.4 of July 2012 provides that circumvent the screen with various drivers and several graphic sources can – what exactly is in the case of the hybrid graphics.Hybrid means that are both the graphics chip on the CPU and GPU for its own use. To use that resource when needed helps to reduce the energy consumption of the computer.
