Unity 2D removed from Ubuntu 12.10

by admin ·

In the last update Ubuntu Quantal Quetzal has been removed desktop shell Unity 2D. The event was not unexpected, the decision was taken at the last summit developer UDS-Q.

In the repository has been loaded with an empty package Unity 2D, installation of the upgrade which removes the already installed version. So put the Unity 2D from the repository in Ubuntu 12.10 will be longer.
Deleting Unity 2D does not mean that Ubuntu developers refuse to start distribution on older systems. Instead, users will be presented to Unity 3D, running through a special video driver llvmpipe .

Also, do not worry and users of Ubuntu 12.04, working with this desktop shell, support for Unity 2D will continue to be implemented during the life of the distribution until April 2017.

The motivation of such a solution is obvious, it was necessary, so as not to disperse the efforts of developers to support both desktop and concentrate on developing only one, thus eliminating the more mistakes and making more improvements.
