Pangolin: Shuttleworth christened Ubuntu 12:04

The tradition of Ubuntu releases include the designation of the version with Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth and financier.

For 12.04, the next release with Long Term Support (LTS), Shuttleworth in his blog selected the Precise Pangolin. The idea for the precise Pangolin, a pangolin, which feeds on ants and termites came, Mark Shuttleworth on a tour of the Kalahari, where he pursued a Pangolin.

As Shuttleworth wrote on his blog, the pangolin is appropriate because it “accurately” controls each ant hill because his scales and a marvel of detail and thus are already a fashion statement.

The latter refers to our own desktop environment Shuttleworth Unity, whose design is so far not met with unanimous approval. Not least, the pangolin can provide excellent protection and withstand including the attacks of lions. These properties, the Canonical chief, were also applicable for Ubuntu LTS, which is why he has rejected the alternatives Perspicacious Panda, Predatory Panther Peccable Peccary, pawky Python, puku and Perfidious Porangi Packhorse.

The code names of Ubuntu releases follow the alphabet, the next version will get a mascot with “Q”. Previously published in mid-October but still Ubuntu, codenamed 11:10 OneiricOcelot . Precise Pangolin is planned for April 2012.
