White Paper “Secure Boot” in UEFI firmware

by admin ·

Canonical and Red Hat have jointly published a white paper on “the facts, the Secure Boot” in UEFI firmware compiles and asks the manufacturer to provide an easy way to turn on and off the safety function.

Does Matthew Garrett of Red had since July in a series of blog posts written dealing with the UEFI firmware. A month ago, he pointed to the new “Secure Boot” functionality, which is guaranteed by the BIOS stored key that only correctly signed software can be booted. If the hardware manufacturer to keep it in control of the key, then vice versa, users lose full control over the device, in particular, they can boot any alternative or modified operating systems. The manufacturers who want to get a Windows-8 certification must implement “Secure Boot,” leaving it to them but if they make the function can be switched off and how they manage the keys.

cryptsetup – 1.4.0

by admin ·

Significant changes:

  • if the device is not rotating disk, the key to erase algorithm Gutmann will not be used. This area will be overwritten once with random data;
  • zaglovok LUKS can now be separated. It can be put to another disk and in another file. To do so, introduced a new option – header. This option applies only to devices LUKS, and can be used with commands such as luksFormat, luksOpen, luksSuspend, luksResume and resize.

An example. Create a LUKS encrypted device to device / dev / sdb with the title on / dev / sdc. Will be used all the space / dev / sdb, under the title of anything is not reserved:

Apple provides the source code for Apple’s Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC)

by admin ·

The Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) is an audio codec developed by Apple and supported on iPhone, iPad, most iPods, Mac and iTunes. ALAC is a data compression method which reduces the size of audio files with no loss of information. A decoded ALAC stream is bit-for-bit identical to the original uncompressed audio file.

The Apple Lossless Audio Codec project contains the sources for the ALAC encoder and decoder. Also included is an example command line utility, called alacconvert, to read and write audio data to / from Core Audio Format (CAF) and WAVE files. A description of a ‘magic cookie’ for use with files based on the ISO base media file format (eg MP4 and M4A) is included as well.

Ubuntu and Kubuntu 11:10

by admin ·

With new variants, enhanced software offering enhanced services and is preparing to Ubuntu, to serve the community even better than before. An improved package management and updated desktops have been taken yet by the way.

Scheduled every six months as the new version was published 11:10 »Ocelot Oneiric the Ubuntu Linux distribution.” In addition to numerous innovations on the desktop, including an improved version of Unity and the new KDE SC 4.7.1, brings Ubuntu 11:10 and installation images for ARM systems AC100 netbook Toshiba and Freescale i.MX53 .

Ubuntu Server now includes again the Xen hypervisor, but also support for Linux Containers (LXC). It also includes Orchestra , a collection of the best free software services to manage the infrastructure in data centers. Furthermore, Juju, developed under the name Ensemble has been integrated, a tool to allow the distribution and administration of services to the cloud and normal servers. Also from the server, there’s an ARM variant. And then there’s the new version Lubuntu who installed the LXDE desktop as the default.

Like its predecessor, 11:04 Ubuntu is a version with the new version of a longer-term support. It is supplied in all variants 18 months with security and other critical updates. An update of the version without reinstalling 11:04 is officially supported.

This article will limit itself to the desktop environments KDE and Unity. For practical reasons, other restrictions are necessary. So naturally to many distribution related software packages have been changed or replaced. With few exceptions, these changes can not be discussed, one can assume that most packages on all current distributions are almost the same and work equally well everywhere.

As always, it should be noted that this is not a test of hardware compatibility. It is known that Linux supports more hardware than any other operating system, and the majority already in the standard package. A test specific hardware would be too much effort for little benefit. If you encounter problems with the hardware, the websites of Ubuntu are ready to solve.

As a test on real hardware, not the goal of the article is to be used for the article, two identical virtual machines, 64 bit, under KVM, each with 768 MB of RAM.

Ubuntu is usually made from a live system that is available on CD and DVD larger installed. Furthermore, an installation of the “Alternate” CD, possible, which runs in text mode, but has much more flexibility than the graphical installation.

Red Hat enters Open Compute project at

by admin ·

The Linux distributor and open-source solutions provider Red Hat has joined the Open Compute project that was initiated by Facebook. “Open Compute” is aimed at the most efficient data centers at the lowest possible cost to create. The members of the project use their experience and knowledge in order to define the future technologies and data centers.

With the founding of the Open Compute project started Facebook, the principles of open source software to transmit data centers.

Technologies are made widely available, so they can continue to develop. The aim of the project is to make data centers more efficient to reduce their energy consumption and to use the heat better. The first data center of the project is located in Prineville, Oregon. It has a 38 percent higher energy efficiency and costs about a quarter less than conventional comparable facilities.
