Splashtop OS: Fast Linux for Windows users

The Splashtop Inc. has its small, Linux-based operating system for all interested parties to download freely given. So far Splashtop on many PCs in the BIOS was built. It provides quick access to the Internet without the operating system the computer must be powered up.

The beta version of Splashtop OS 1.0 has been released last year in November. Meanwhile, the developers have so far eliminated any errors that they can call the system stable. In addition, most computers now are supported, the beta version worked only with hardware from HP.

Splashtop is the heart of Chromium web browser. Most of the information contained in the system applications to run in the cloud, so it is useful for users who spend much time with Facebook, Twitter and their ilk. The system should be booted within seconds and can be adapted with thousands of available web applications to the needs of users.

Cebit 2011: hedgehog with aufgemotztem UD3 and RemoteFX

The thin client specialist Igel show at Cebit upgraded hardware and new features of its own Linux firmware.

The thin client model UD3 has provided the manufacturer with a Nano-E-Series processor with 800 MHz VIA, which will bring faster boot times, about 40 percent more processing power and lower energy consumption. The network is the revised client with gigabit LAN.

At Cebit 2011 Igel Thin Client receives a faster processor and updated Linux firmware UD3.

High-Availability für Linux: Steeleye Lifekeeper 7.3

Der US-amerikanische Software-Hersteller SIOS (ehemals Steeleye) hat die neueste Version seiner High-Availibility-Software Lifekeeper für Linux vorgestellt.

Lifekeeper unterstützt ab Version 7.3 erstmals das vor kurzem ebenfalls neu erschienene Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6. Neu sind ebenfalls Watchdog-Timer in Soft- und Hardware wie auch der erweiterte Support der STONITH-Methode über IPMI, die sicherstellt, dass teilweise ausgefallene Cluster-Knoten komplett abgeschaltet werden.

Außer für RHEL 6 ist Lifekeeper/Linux für RHEL 4 und 5, Suse Linux Enterprise Server 10 und 11, Asianux, Oracle Linux sowie Cent OS 4 und 5 verfügbar.

FreeBSD refreshes ZFS

The FreeBSD developers have released version 8.2 with the third release of the 8-STABLE branch.

Here, the support for Full Virtualization (HVM) in the 64-bit version and for para-virtualization on the i386 architecture has been improved. The on-disk format of the ZFS file system, the developers have upgraded to version 15 and it accepted performance optimization of Open Solaris. Also the support of Solaris also derived DTrace has been improved.

LTR Update: Identity Management with FreeIPA

What is the Open Source equivalent of Active Directory on Windows?

The main components are of course also free software – LDAP, DNS, Kerberos and network file systems – but each sale has its own administration interface and operating philosophy. FreeIPA wants to change that and integrate the management of users, groups or services on Linux. A new version is the finish came a step closer.

About the project sponsored by Red Hat FreeIPA had the Linux Technical Review some time ago, reported at the presentation of the first version. Meanwhile, the developers made good progress and it is the version 2.0, which features remarkable new features. Time for an update that is now in the form of this item is available.
Machinery and service identities have been added new management features have been added.

On the roadmap for the next time configuration options are more central to policy settings and audit,
together with mechanisms for rollout of system settings on many machines simultaneously. The existing Microsoft Active Directory integration will be expanded further by using Samba 4. The policy component can now also manage host-based access control, and Sudo password rules.

Cebit 2011: Premiere of the FOSS Cloud

The open-source systems integrator FOSS Group presents at CeBIT for the first time its cloud solution. The FOSS-Cloud is completely free software that lets you know the manufacturer.

The FOSS-Cloud offers a redundant server infrastructure to operate services and virtualized desktop systems (Linux or Windows). The solution should also include access management, and file and print services.

The basis of the cloud are Linux, the KVM and Qemu virtualization technologies, Libvirt, the desktop management Spice, OpenLDAP and PHP. In their own developments, the FOSS Group focuses on the European software license EUPL.

CfP: Results searched for Real Time Linux

The 13th Real Time Linux Workshop (RTLWS) of 20 to 22 October in Prague looking presentations.

Who wants in autumn in Prague to give a lecture to real-time Linux and adjacent topics, dates back to before 13 June an abstract via the online form one. In the abstract to the organizers want a justification of the presentation, a description of the procedure for such studies / experiments / examples, a summary of results and a conclusion to what extent influence the presented content from the current state of things.

Some examples of the long list of desired topics are real-time-oriented modifications and variants of Linux, real-time applications from research and industry, relevant open source software in the security field, educational materials to real-time Linux, general concepts to real-time operating systems, and special synchronization or cooperation mechanisms to non-real-time systems.

The presenters will receive up to 8 July modest and will be asked to 5th September to submit their paper. The call for paper records details of topics, sequence five local contacts. The 13th RTLWS is hosted by the Technical University of Prague.

Network UPS Tools 2.6.0

January 14, 2011 released a new version of Network UPS Tools (NUT). NUT – a set of utilities and demons to complete the work with a variety of power sources that can be controlled from your computer: uninterruptible power supplies (Uninterruptible Power Supply, UPS), power distribution ( Power Distribution Unit , PDU) and controllers, solar batteries.

Major changes in version 2.6.0:

  • Completely altered documentation. Updates have been made: the site, user guide, developer’s guide, guide, and page maintainers man.

Fluxbox 1.3 Released

Continuing an old tradition, Fluxbox again “jumped” a few versions. Today, after nearly two years of development, released a new release of this wonderful window manager – Fluxbox 1.3 (previous version was 1.1).

In the new release:

  • Support for both directions of the text (as is traditional for us left to right and from right to left). Patches on the subject were made several years ago, but received them only now. (more…)
