Ubuntu: Change GDM to LightDM?
by admin ·
It seems that from Canonical keep getting “good news” to Gnome, following its decision to adopt Unity . In this case, any change affects GDM (Gnome Display Manager), ie that all users of Ubuntu (desktop) is in its interface login. This is one of the options that were considered in blueprinds-launchpad for the 11.04 version of this distro. LightDM, Ancell Roobert developed by Canonical, it would be the choice for this change.
Why reflect on this possible change?
- For LightDM is faster than GDM.
- For LightDM is more flexible. Other variations could use Ubuntu (Kubuntu, Lubuntu, etc).
- Only 5,000 lines of code, compared with 50,000 in GDM.
- Versatility. Support XDMCP (X Display Manager Control Protocol), for example.
In any case, the priority marked in this proposal is low, so you may not see light for v. 11.04.
