How did you discover Linux?

by admin ·

Recently, this question was posed by monsterb of linuxcranks.info to the Linux community. He is obviously not the first to ask this question, while writing this, I was listening to the Linux Outlaws podcast where they discuss a very long thread on their forums asking this very question. I think it is an interesting question, and decided to answer it here in a blog post, and ask you the reader, how did you discover Linux?

My story starts similarly to many others I think, in that I discovered Linux through a friend who gave me a Red Hat CD. Where my story deviates is unlike most people, I know the exact day that I began my Linux journey.

My Linux journey started on 13 June 1998. I had purchased my first computer, a Dell XPS system on 6 June 1998 with Windows 95 pre-installed. I had no previous experience with computers, and therefor no real understanding of what I was really getting my myself into.

So with 7 days computer experience, Red Hat 5.0 Hurricane (A fitting name for a distro given my location.) install CD and a Linux Unleashed book, I began the great adventure that still continues today. I own allot to Linux, both professionally and personally. While I would liked to have applied myself more earlier on, without doubt would do it all over again.

Well that is my story on how I discovered Linux. How did you discover Linux? Leave a comment and let me know, I’d be interested to hear you story.
