McAfee: Windows running under Linux pests
by admin ·
Under the title ” Running Windows in Linux malware “Antivirus vendors McAfee has published on his blog a test that will show that, worms and other parasites for have been written to run Windows on Linux viruses.
Now panic is appropriate? Hardly. For the simple trick is to Wine: First, according to testers the tool under Ubuntu 8.04 installed and then set up a number of pests. The result should hardly surprise anyone. Why should Windows programs run under Wine but not a pest?
The result in brief:
The pests will be able to spread within Wine. However, and this is probably the only interesting, the malware is not broken out. The author speculates only that pests which attach themselves to files easily, even under Files Linux attack could happen but it’s not. Keyloggers can also cause anything in the system or intercept keystrokes in Linux.
It works but has the IRC malware. The tester could control the pest by the IRC server – but only limited. There could be some system information and read data download to the local PC. That does not sound good, but Linux users who use IRC in Wine? Regardless yes is just one example …
To reduce the risk, advises McAfee Wine to run as root and never resolve, among other things transclusions drive.
