write failed: Input/output error

by admin ·

It wasn’t a good day to burn DVD’s. When I attempted to burn the Fedora 10 Beta iso with the OS burning software, I ran in errors. So I tried other software.

Trying K3B gave me this error-

Executing ‘builtin_dd if=/dev/fd/0 of=/dev/sr0 obs=32k seek=0′
/dev/sr0: “Current Write Speed” is 12.3x1352KBps.

I got a similar error with GnomeBaker as well-

Executing ‘mkisofs -gui -V GnomeBaker data disk -A GnomeBaker -p TK009 -iso-level 3 -l -r -hide-rr-moved -J -joliet-long -graft-points –path-list /tmp/GnomeBaker-tk009/gnomebaker-AZ4KIU | builtin_dd of=/dev/sr0 obs=32k seek=0′

Needless to say, this didn’t make me a happy camper. So off to Google I went in search of an answer, and find answers I did. It would seem there is no shortage of possible solutions, yet no consensus on the problem. Bad media, bad writer, automount, DMA, to name a few.

Burning CD+R’s worked just fine in the drive, and I’ve burned DVD+R’s in the drive before using the same media. Automount on or off didn’t nothing for me, same with DMA. I didn’t have any other media on hand, though allot of the information pointed the finger at Memorex DVD+R 16X, the media I am using.

One thing I did read was a post that advised cleaning the lens of the writer. My writer is 2+ years old and dusty as hell, this seemed like a possible solution. That turned out to be a task without a cleaning CD. I had no choice but to pull the drive, take it apart and use a q-tip and alcohol (very gently) to clean it.

I’d like to say that solved the problem, it didn’t. while apart, I discovered a small piece of broken plastic. This turned out to be a guide for the tray when opening and closing. The tray had been flaky from day one and I never babied it. When I re-installed the the drive and powered up, the drive tray failed to open more than 3/4 of an inch. Try as I might to mess with it, it was a no go. The guide would get stuck and then the drive wouldn’t close.

Yeah, new DVD writer :( , after a ride to the store and $30.

My feeling given the state of the drive, was that cleaning the lens would have solved the issue. It burned without issue before not 30 days ago. $30 later, I should have tried new media first, and purchased a writer cleaning kit.

My sugestion to anyone that runs in to the error is to-
1. Try new media
2. Clean the lens (w/cleaning CD if possible)

Barring my bad luck with the drive, cleaning the lens was easy, and media is never wasted.
